National Mezcal Day is here, and if you haven’t discovered the magic of this smoky, complex spirit, now’s your chance! It’s time to embrace one of Mexico’s most ancient and beloved spirits. While Tequila and Mezcal are both made from the agave plant, mezcal is crafted using a different process that gives it a much smokier and robust flavour. Unlike tequila, which is made exclusively from blue agave, mezcal can be made from over 30 varieties of agave, each offering distinct flavours.
Mezcal is crafted using methods passed down for centuries, the agave hearts are roasted in underground pits, giving mezcal it signature smoky character. It’s a versatile spirit, great for sipping on its own or used in your favourite margarita.
Dos Hombres mezcal, created by Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, is a great, approachable mezcal, even for those who are new to the mezcal world. They collaborated with producers in Oaxaca to create their mezcal, made from Espadin agave.
Mezcal is a testament to Mexican culture and craftsmanship. From the slow-growing agave plants to the artisanal, hands-on production process, mezcal honours centuries-old traditions.
Salud!
